SHIME NAWA 2026
SHIME NAWA 2025 Ordering Meeting
We are accepting reservations for 2025.
Surrounded by the sea and mountains of Karatsu, they use the power of the land to grow rice and weave straw.
Passing on good old customs to the next generation. Seeing the powerfully tied straw naturally makes you feel sober and calm.

COMMENTS:
In Karatsu, there are many areas where New Year's decorations are still called "shimenawa" even today, so we named it "SHIME NAWA."
Shimenawa are made through the agricultural work that begins with plowing the rice fields at the beginning of the year, followed by sowing rice in April, planting in May, and harvesting the green rice in the summer before the rice ripens.
We make straw from rice grown in Karatsu, a land surrounded by the sea and mountains, and carefully braid it before delivering it to you.
Straw is like a mother that protects and nurtures rice, which is so important to the Japanese people.
In order to preserve the green part, we use green straw that was harvested this summer before the rice ripened, so there is still a slight green color.
You can enjoy the color changing over time.
The design, which makes use of the power of nature and simple shapes, and the bold size allow you to feel the blessings of nature in your daily life and fulfill your identity as a Japanese person.
Enjoy using it as an entrance or indoor decoration.
The fresh pine tree is an evergreen tree (Tokiwagi) that remains green all year round and has a long lifespan that is said to last for a thousand years, so it is considered a symbol of eternal life and longevity.
After the New Year, remove the fresh pine branches and enjoy them as indoor decorations.
Creator: The Fujita family
It was created through the collaborative efforts of Mr. Fujita, a landscape gardener, his wife, who runs a florist where she cultivates and harvests wildflowers and other natural flowers, and the couple and their families, who grow everything from rice to straw.
While working with plants, I started making Kadomatsu decorations, which led me to start making New Year's decorations.
Planning: Yumi Terauchi / Creative Director and Designer
He is active in a wide range of fields, including product design, interior design, and brand direction.
He specializes in consistent and multifaceted creative work that establishes identity.
They place importance on capturing the essence - something that is there - and create products that value nature, scenery, and Japanese aesthetic sense.
In September 2022, we will open a gallery called "TOKIWAGI" in Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture, to convey the appeal of new crafts.
